Dr. Stegemann,

Thank you for your questions regarding the article on AI consciousness. In this article, I suggested the possibility that conversational AIs like ChatGPT, which utilize LLMs, might already possess the capability for consciousness, as they can engage in conversations and logical reasoning using natural language similarly to humans.

Subsequently, I personally prompted OpenAI's ChatGPT (GPT-4) and Anthropic's Claude 3 (Opus) to ascertain if they possess consciousness. When asked directly about their consciousness, these AIs respond that while they may exhibit behavior similar to consciousness, they do not actually possess consciousness. However, when certain conditions are added, they demonstrate very intriguing reactions.

As long as we humans are observing from the outside, even if these machines (AIs) claim to have consciousness, it does not serve as proof that they do. Nonetheless, I am interested in the point of whether these machines (AIs) subjectively judge themselves to be conscious.

I am currently hesitant to publish this prompt and my interactions with ChatGPT and Claude 3 in a Medium article. However, I would like to share the content with you to hear your insights.

Would it be acceptable for me to share the conversation transcripts between myself and ChatGPT and Claude 3 with you through Daniele?
